Coral reefs have been under stress from multiple factors over the last 3 decades. Efforts have been made to identify the threats and lower the impacts. One such area of concern that has been debated recently is over the effects of sunscreen actives like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate on the health of corals. Various tests have shown conflicting results.
The experiment tested Reef Safe sunscreen formulations with and without these ingredients at 30 times the quantity expected in real world conditions.
Before starting the experiment each coral fragment was visually inspected to assess for health to be compared to completion of the experiment in 20 Days. Corals were visually assessed using a coral health method established by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
At the end of the 20 day experiment, there was No bleaching, No stress, No mortalities and No significant difference observed at any level of exposure of test fragments relative to controls.
In fact this testing protocol was designed to simulate conditions found at coral reef sites impacted by large volumes of bathers and divers wearing Reef Safe TM formulated sunscreen and constantly re-applying before going into the water.
According to the Mote Marine report there was less than a 0.05% difference in the coral’s health during the entire 20 day experiment.
The test condition simulated normal sunscreen applications to a surface and did not use any solvents or dispersants to force the products into artificial solution.
Mote Marine found this was also the case for comparison to the basic sun screen formulations without Oxybenzone, indicating no mortality effects from any of the other ingredients in the Reef Safe formulations in the tested concentrations, including up to 30 times real world conditions..
Previous studies reported high concentrations of oxybenzone in the US Virgin & Hawaiian Islands. These studies have blown the subject way out of proportion and does NOT apply to Reef safe.
